Fitzroy Football Club since 1996
The Fitzroy Football Club Ltd. came out of administration in November 1996
and was restored to the control of its' legally elected board led by Chairman
Dyson Hore-Lacy. However as a football club it has no football operations of
its own for the moment, even though it actively sponsors a number of teams.
A short sponsorship of the Coburg Football Club in the VFL (formerly the VFA)
took place in 1999-2000 with Coburg renaming itself for a short time as the
'Coburg-Fitzroy Football Club' and also wore the Fitzroy guernsey for
some games against traditional AFL Rivals. However Coburg's own financial difficulties
forced them to seek an alignment with AFL club Richmond who themselves were
not keen to see a Fitzroy presence at the Coburg club. Coburg now play as the
Coburg Tigers. Fitzroy Football Club Ltd. also sponsor teams in the Fitzroy
area particularly the Fitzroy Juniors. They also sponsor the Fitzroy Reds to
the tune of at least $3,000 per year. The Fitzroy Reds play in Division 3 of
the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA).. Fitzroy Football Club Ltd.
has also come to an arrangement with Ivanhoe for the 2001 season and is fielding
an Under 19 team known as Ivanhoe-Fitzroy. There is a possibility in 2002, depending
on a number of factors, that Fitzroy may very well field it's own U/19 team
in a competition yet to be determined. Possibly for the first time since 1996,
the Fitzroy Football Club will have a functioning football operation.
Bill Atherton, secretary of the Fitzroy Football Club recently had this to say
via a letter to the Herald-Sun.
Roys alive and well
Sorry to disappoint.....but the Fitzroy Football Club is still very much
alive.
Come out to our traditional home ground at Brunswick Street today to watch the
VAFA match of the day Fitzroy v. Richmond. The game starts at the traditional
time of 2 pm.
Just because the club is not in the AFL does not mean that we do not exist.
We support local footy in Fitzroy and are trying to get a better deal with Brisbane
for Fitzroy supporters.
