Fitzroy Reds
2002 Draw VAFA D2.
The Fitzroy Reds are an inner suburban football club representing
the oldest suburb in Melbourne. After going undefeated and winning the
Premiership in the D3 section of the Victorian Amateur Football Association
(VAFA) in 2001, 2002 promises to be an exciting season for the Reds,
as they compete in D2 of the competition.
Evolving from the University Reds Football Club, the Fitzroy
Reds are a club that aims to represent the wider community of Fitzroy.
The aim in 2002 is not only win back to back premierships, but to attract
as many new supporters to the club as possible. The football club promotes
and celebrates its' social and family environment.
The Fitzroy Reds first competed in the VAFA in 1955. Competing
as the thrird club representing Melbourne University, along the Blacks
and the Blues. After a stint in the Melbourne Metro League, the Reds
returned to the VAFA in 1973. The Reds won their first flag in 1980
and followed this up with a Grand Final appearance in 1982. The Reds
continued to play at different grounds throughout the 80's, until 1990,
when they first played at the Mecca for for all Fitzroy supporters,
the Brunswick Street Oval. In 1998, the club made a decision to change
its name from University Reds, to Fitzroy Reds. This reflected the club;s
status as a community football club representing the Fitzroy district.
In taking on the name 'Fitzroy', the Reds have also adopted
the Fitzroy Football Club's colours and theme song. The Fitzroy Foundation
saw this as a good opportunity to become a supporter of the reds. Many
Fitzroy and Brisbane Lions supporters have also become supporters of
the Reds. Seeing the support from Fitzroy supporters, the Fitzroy Football
Club became the official guernsey sponsor in 2001.
Come along and see a Fitzroy team play with pride and
passion once again on the spiritual home of Fitzroy - Brunswick Street
Oval.

Committee Cacklings - June 22nd
2002
Halfway through the season and a heartbreaking 1 pt loss to Peninsula
leaves the senior's 3 & 6. To the Fitzroy Reds follower-once-removed,
I guess our current position on the ladder can be easily frowned upon.
But to the persistent observer in the outer, the reality is that we
have shown continual improvement over nine games and as a result things
are definitely looking up for the 2nd half of the year. Our desire
to improve as a team in spite of our young list, numerous nail biting
defeats and the loss of more than half our 2001 Premiership side (injury,
overseas, interstate & retirement) is an absolute credit to the
players and coaching staff. On reflection of Saturday's game what
really stood out was our unmatchable intensity and commitment to each
contest in the last quarter. When you look at the record we didn't
get the 4 pts, but I think it's obvious to players that if we harness
the last quarter enthusiasm & desire to get the footy and take
it into the coming weeks good things will happen
OK now to the really good stuff - History was made for the Reds on
the weekend with the Club 18s cracking it for their first ever win.
Reports have it that our new Kiwi recruit JP carved up, while Gareth
- fresh from a 14-year spell - was the Rock of Gibraltar in the backline.
Well done fellas, a true testament to belief in yourselves, each other
and Boxy actually coughing up $200 worth of lager (even I had my doubts
).
See Snippets section - Ed.
I must also make mention of Ragsy's stellar 10-goal performance in
his 200th game for the Reds v Kew b4 the Queens B'day Long weekend.
An amazing effort, but even more amazing considering our mercurial
ressies full forward, Plugger, kicked 11 alongside him. Congratulations
Ragsy, a performance I'm sure you'll be talking about for years to
come.
And last but not least a big thankyou to Cass, Mel & Plugger
for their assistance in overcoming the biggest challenge of the season
- the City of Yarra amenity inspections. Cass was solid in defence
of the changeroom floors, Plugger's dirty work in the toilets was
not a reportable offence (for a change), while Mel was her usual self
mopping up any messy situations. My own individual performance was
inspired by the hilarious thought of Eddie McGuire scrubbing away
at the tiles in the Collingwood showers
(now I know why no-one
ran against me at last year's AGM!!!). Plugger was closest to BOG
without a doubt
With the Reds Ball only a week away (Saturday June 29th), I hope
everyone is making last ditch efforts to get extra tables and make
sure we crack the 400 barrier. A genuine excuse to wear leather, feathers
or fur at a public forum, without fear of ridicule, or even arrest,
is surely an opportunity way too good for any of your friends to pass
up???.
Benjy Lee,
President.
REDS RAMBLINGS - June 22nd 2002
Reds Ball Bigger Than Rocca:
It's official: the Reds ball is hotter than the Brownlow. A few weeks
back, Benj got a call from a Manager from the N. Melb Kangaroos FC
who will remain nameless. Turns out she was ringing to find out when
the Reds Ball was being held, because after last year's 400-strong
crowd, she didn't want any of the Kangaroos' functions to clash with
the hottest ticket in town.
Peninsula Hamper On the Nose:
Supporter & family member of the Reds, Wayne Stanistreet, thought
he'd salvaged some respite after Saturday's senior game, when his
lucky number was drawn out in the Peninsula's Match day raffle, winning
a hamper of groceries. Unfortunately that "winning feeling"
turned pear-shaped when he discovered everything was past it's use
by date....
Boxy a Cheap, Drunk Bastard:
He'd been saying it for weeks: "Win and you've got $250 of jackpotted
money on the Newry Bar." So the 3rds won, and quicker than a
Nigel lead, that $250 turned to $150. There was no explanation from
Boxy, although spies did see him stumbling towards the Newry Hotel
toilets at 1am. When asked if he'd been there all day, he just wrapped
his arms around the spy and said: "I looooooovvvve youuuuuuuu."
Yoga for Vegetarians
Special mentions go out to the Reds' not-so-diligent vegetarian Marcus,
who got so hammered on Saturday night he bought FOUR burgers from
McDonalds on the way home, and to WILD-MAN-TOM, who responded to Hot
Dogs' call for "Tom will take a stretch in the goal-square"
at training Thursday night by stunning the players when he called
out "Righto fellas, we're going to do some YOGA". Apparently
it was some sight seeing the boys in the "Tiger" pose chanting
out 1-2-3-4-5!!!!!

Round 10 Preview: Fitzroy Reds Seniors
Saturday 22nd June 2002
Preview: This week vs Yarra Valley
Old Boys
Yarra Valley Old Boys are sitting on top of the ladder and are the
bench mark of the D2 competition. The Fitzroy Reds senior team will
gain their best indication yet, just how far they have improved in
the first half od the season when they attempt to avenge a 65 point
loss suffered in Round 1 this year.
Results and Match Reports
Round 9
We drove so God-damn far to come so
God-damn close
To the punters who drove the distance, the Fitzroy Reds Seniors put
in a heart-and-soul performance to fall one agonizing point short of
a draw, and two short of victory. Coach Burgs was shattered, but proud
of the effort: "You know, the best team doesn't always win. We
should have won it. But the effort was just fantastic in what is the
toughest road trip in the comp." Burgs said there were "15
or 16 incidents" that didn't fall our way and could have, that
would have determined a winning result. However, the future at the Reds,
as always, remains positive. "I'm confident that we can win 7 games
in the 2nd half of the year. If that gets us in, well and good. If it
doesn't it will make a mess of the teams above us." Burgs believes
the Reds gave it all last weekend, and that as luck would have it, we
don't, having lost 3 out of the last 4 games by a combined total of
about 15 points. "Oh mate, I cried all the way home," Burgs
said. "With the team we had we couldn't have done better and I
couldn't coach any better than that." But Burgs believes we're
the best team out of the 4, and we're having a real crack. This week
we face Yarra Valley away, who have only lost one game. "They're
the measuring stick, there's no doubt," Burgs reckons. "It's
a huge assignment - last week they beat 2nd by 15 goals - but since
Round 3 we've been competitive each week, and we've got another six
blokes over 6 foot 3 that we didn't have last time. Do I think we can
win? Yes. They'll take us lightly and they'll get a rude shock. If we
play our best we can beat them - it's that simple."

17 Fit Men and Three
Old Men Win
After the last game - 10 goals by Ragsy, 11 by the Plugger Sydney wish
they had - last week's game was always going to be hard. But when only
17 fit men were available before the first siren, and Bright Eyes, CT
and Tubby were seen in shorts for the first time in years, well then,
this was a turn-up for the fans. And the boys did them proud with another
easy 10-goal win. Bright Eyes was concerned we wouldn't match them height-wise,
but the little men starred up forward, back and on the wings. "They
were competitive early, but when the game was there to be won the boys
responded very well," Bright Eyes said. "Yarra Valley this
week is the big challenge. It's 1st versus 2nd, and the challenge is
there if the boys want to take it. It's certainly a big chance to see
where we are at the moment, I'm looking forward to it."

Fitzroy Reds Thirds - Round 9
3rds Get That Winning Feeling
.Then Get Pissed!
By now you've heard the news. The Fitzroy Reds won their first Club
18 game in style on the weekend, downing Trinity by 24 points, and moving
off the bottom of the ladder. But Boxy reckons it should have been 10
goals. "The game was won after ½ time - when we normally
fall away - when we took control over their midfield, Andy started dominating
in the ruck and we got first hands to the ball and used it well."
And when did you know we had it won? "I reckon about 10 minutes
into the last quarter, when they had a couple of opportunities to score
and our backline held firm." In hindsight, Boxy reckons we were
always going to win. "Throughout the game, if we weren't controlling
the play we were breaking even. I was pleased by the effort of all 20
players whenever they had the opportunity to get the ball or help a
team-mate. It's difficult to find outstanding players on the day because
everyone was good when they had to be." Boxy, too, was happy with
the performance after the game: Nick Mann was BIP (Best In Pub), closely
followed by Boxy and Gareth.
